Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Dentistry has made great strides in conquering pain associated with
dental operative procedures through the use of local and general
anesthetics.  The fear of pain has been somewhat more elusive and
difficult to control.  Many children, although acknowledging they are
not being hurt, still indicate they are "scared" and keep thinking the
procedure is going to hurt.

In some children the mental attitude toward the dental treatment
must be changed in a positive and helpful manner. The tool that has
been found most helpful in changing this attitude involves the use of
nitrous oxide-oxygen as analgesic.

Characteristics of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide has a number of characteristics that make it an ideal
agent to produce the desired reduction of fear and anxiety. They are:

1.- It is odorless and non-explosive.
2.- Its onset of effect is rapid. The patient is easily maintained at the
desired level of analgesia, and there is a rapid reversibility.
3.- Fear and anxiety are diminished.
4.- It produces a euphoric state and obtunds pain to a lesser degree.
5.- Side effects of the procedure are minimal.
6.- There is no danger of addiction.
